T-shirt Controversy Ends in $240,000 Award

| |

Following an incident in August 2006, Raed Jarrar has recently been awarded $240,000 in compensation because he was asked to cover his T-shirt while boarding a JetBlue flight from JFK Airport in New York to Oakland, CA.

The T-shirt in question was written in Arabic with a message of "We will not be silent." He was told that other passengers felt uncomfortable because the T-shirt was like "wearing a T-shirt at a bank stating, I am a robber."

Jarrar covered the shirt and was allowed to board the plane. A lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union stated "This case is a victory for free speech and a blow to the discriminatory practice of racial profiling."
